Fredericksburg and Gillespie County are centrally located in the state, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, and are within easy driving distance to the commercial airline gateways of San Antonio International Airport (SAT) and Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) International Airport. Drive time from these airports to Main Street in Fredericksburg is roughly one hour and 30 minutes. U.S. Highways 87 and 290 intersect in Fredericksburg, and along with State Highway 16, provide easy access to all points on the compass.

Fredericksburg is a great place for outdoor-lovers. Ten state parks and natural areas are located in the region around Fredericksburg. The Hill Country is famous among birders as the most reliable place to see two endangered species – the jewel-like Golden-cheeked Warbler and the red-eyed Black-capped Vireo. The Hill Country supports the largest white-tailed deer population in the state. With more than 50 special events & festivals held annually, Fredericksburg is always brimming with activity. The early German settlers brought their love of music and singing with them from the Old Country. One of the longest running events is the Gillespie County Fair in August, which has been celebrated for over 115 years.

Our annual calendar offers events and festivals ranging from the traditional Schuetzenfest (target shooting competition) to big Fourth of July happenings to a Native American PowWow to live horse racing in the summer to “Art Past Dark.” The Fredericksburg Food and Wine Fest is a popular event held at the end of October in downtown Fredericksburg, Texas, on Marktplatz (the 100 block of West Main Street) and is a full-course celebration of Texas food, wine, live entertainment, specialty booths, food court, and fun for all. The community also celebrates its German heritage through Oktoberfest at the beginning of the month. During the festival, you’ll find a variety of entertainment, food and fun on the Marktplatz, Downtown.

The Fredericksburg Theater Company presents great theatrical events each year ranging from full production musicals to comedies and drama. Local choral groups give concerts throughout the year, including two choirs whose concerts are sung in German. The winters are mild with the average January maximum temperature at 60 degrees Fahrenheit while the average daily August temperature is 95 degrees. The annual average rainfall in Gillespie County is 27.44 inches, with the most rainfall in April, May, June and September. The humidity is moderate throughout the year. Prevailing winds are southerly with smog relatively unknown. Gillespie County receives about 62 percent of the total possible sunshine annually. The average freeze free growing season is 219 days with the first freeze normally Nov. 6 and the last freeze April 1.

Agriculture was the first business to locate in Gillespie County over 150 years ago and continues to be a thriving part of today’s prosperity. Food and fiber crops, livestock and all hunting account for annual cash receipts in excess of 50 million dollars. Nearly every crop can be grown in the rich soil of the Pedernales Valley in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. In addition to being the number one peach producing county in Texas, there are apples, pecans, plums, berries and every conceivable table vegetable. There are several vineyards and five wineries in Gillespie County producing nationally and internationally acclaimed wines.

Nearby Stonewall is the birthplace of former U.S. President Lyndon Johnson and his LBJ Ranch (much of which is now the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park) is located nearby. The population in Stonewall is about 500, and the town is known for having the sweetest, juiciest peaches found anywhere in Texas.

Harper is another small community close to Fredericksburg, located on the Pedernales River. It serves as the social and religious focal point for the area’s farmers and ranchers. The community has grown quite a bit recently, and now has about 1,000 residents. Those that live there and love it consider it the epitome of all that is great about small-town Texas.
